Key points

  • Send birthday invitations about four weeks before the party; six weeks for a children's party at a venue or a surprise party, and at least eight weeks if guests have to travel.
  • Ask guests to reply a week or two before the party; for a dinner at a hired venue, three to four weeks before.
  • A children's party invitation should give an end time, so parents know when to collect.
  • A printed birthday invitation is usually 5×7 or 4×6 inches; for WhatsApp, a portrait image of 1080×1350 pixels shows in full.

What should a birthday invitation say?

  • Whose birthday it is, and the age if it's a milestone.
  • The date and start time, and an end time for children's parties so parents know when to collect.
  • The address, with parking or entry notes if the venue is hard to find.
  • A theme or dress code, if there is one.
  • Who to reply to, and by when.

How do you word a birthday invitation?

Write it the way you'd say it: whose birthday it is, what's happening, when and where, and how to reply. One or two sentences is enough. A milestone dinner can sound a little more formal, a child's party can be playful, and directions or gift notes go in the message you send with the card.

For a milestone birthday:

Sarah is turning 40. Join us for dinner and drinks on Friday 8 March from 7 p.m. at The Old Mill. Please reply by 1 March.

For a child's party:

Zain is 6! Come to his party on Sunday 10 March, 2 to 4 p.m., at Jungle Play, Gulberg. Let us know if you can come.

How do I make a birthday invitation on my iPhone?

In Inviteos, on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Choose the occasion.
  2. Add the details: name, date, time, venue and a short message.
  3. Pick a style, for example playful, modern or minimalist.
  4. Choose the size for where you'll send it.
  5. Adjust the colours, then preview and download the card.

What size should a birthday invitation be?

For printing, 5×7 inches is the standard size and fits an A7 envelope; 4×6 inches, the size of a standard photo print, also works. For WhatsApp and other messaging apps, use a portrait image of about 1080×1350 pixels, so it shows in full in the chat.

For the exact pixels at any size, use the invitation size calculator. More detail in our guides to invitation sizes for WhatsApp, standard birthday invitation sizes and how to print invitations at home.

Birthday invitation questions

How far in advance should you send birthday invitations?

About four weeks before the party, which gives guests time to keep the date free. Send them six weeks ahead for a children's party at a venue or a surprise party, and at least eight weeks ahead if guests have to travel.

When should guests reply by for a birthday party?

A week or two before the party is enough for most birthdays, including children’s parties. For a milestone dinner at a restaurant or a hired venue, ask for replies three to four weeks ahead, because the venue will want numbers early.

How do you say no gifts on a birthday invitation?

Add one short line near the reply details, such as “Your company is the only gift we need” or “No gifts, please. Just come and celebrate.” Say it once, kindly, and leave it at that.

Should a children’s party invitation have an end time?

Yes. Parents need to know when to collect their children, and it keeps a two-hour party from running on. Write the time as a range, such as “2 to 4 p.m.”.
